Hawaii is to ban the sale of sunscreen containing chemicals that harm coral reefs.
The ban, which is the first in the world, will halt the sale of creams containing oxybenzone or octinoxate except to those with a prescription.
Some 70 per cent of sunscreens sold in the US are thought to contain oxybenzone and 8 per cent use octinoxate.
Research by Craig Downs, a biologist at the Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, indicated that the chemicals contribute to coral bleaching and kill baby coral in the water. The study prompted Hawaii to put forward a bill banning the sale of lotions containing them from the beginning of 2021.
