The Amazon: The Greatest River

My goal is to get people interested in learning more about this amazing part of South America, and helping to make it great! The ecosystems of the Amazon River and Rainforest are very diverse compared to other world biomes. Many of its indigenous species are threatened and/or endangered. The River is made up of many tributaries and swamps etc. that are home to many species and play a huge part in the ecology of the continent. The Amazon River begins high in the Andes Mountains (Iquitos, Peru.) Its length is around 4000 miles, which is about the distance from New York to Rome. It is the world’s second longest river, the Nile being the longest. However, the Amazon sets the record for the largest amount of water carried (219,000 m3/sec). Many smaller bodies of water merge, creating the River, and eventually flow into the Atlantic Ocean. I had the honor of visiting the Amazon while I was living in Brazil, and got to experience it up-close. I saw many unique species including birds, monkeys and dolphins. Deforestation is one of the biggest threats to the Rainforest. The gas emissions released, count towards 25% of the Earth’s global warming problem, so the safety of the Rainforest and River, is the fist step towards curbing global warming. Some of the biggest problems for the River are dams and overfishing. Dams cut off the water and nutrient circulation, while overfishing, which may seem harmless at first, can eventually result in the extinction of vital fish populations. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to do any physical experiments or research, but hopefully that will be possible in the future
